The History of AMC O'Hare
The Airport Mail Center OHare facility officially opened on July 5, 1956 with approximately 24,000 square feet of floor space and a work force of less than 250 employees. Due to an increase in mail volume and a need to upgrade to new technology, the facility relocated into a new building in May 1967. This new building was approximately 142,350 square feet with an accompanying work force that expanded to over 600 employees.
In 1984 , construction began on the present AMC O'Hare facility which was completed in the summer of 1987. Today this facility is approximately 350,000 square feet in size with 20 dock bays and 540 employees. It has flights to 175 domestic cities and over 1,100 outbound flights available, with 400 - 500 utilized daily to transport mail. It is the largest Domestic Transfer office in the country. The AMC also receives and dispatches First Class mail on surface with 8 orgin and 12 destination trips.
In January 1987, In an effort to improve service and increase flexibility in transporting mail, the AMC and Chicago Metro Surface hub merged as the new Traffic Management Unit for the Great Lakes Area.
Since 1997 The Chicago AMC has seen many upgrades. New Inbound and Outbound traylines, Automated Airline Asignment (AAA) Systems, 3 Pedestal Robots, 1 Small Parcel Bundle Sorter, 1 Flat Sorting Machine (FSM-1000), Holographic Scanners for Inbound mail.
The History of Midway Airport Facility
The First employees from O'Hare were assigned at Midway, March 1998.
The First scheduled mail flights began, Saturday, February 5, 1994. There was only one shift initially, which later expanded to a second shift with additional empoyees assigned , both Clerks and Mail Handlers. At present (MDW) Midway runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week with one manger and 6 employees. The Inbound/Outbound operations receives mail for the 604/605 service area with 5 Chicago area facilities dispatching mail to over 10 destinations via Midway.
